Balenciaga under fire for ‘scary’ adverts of children with ‘bondage outfits’
Monday, the fashion house shared a new statement on Instagram in which he said he “would like to address the controversies surrounding our recent ad campaigns.”
Balenciaga has faced widespread backlash over two recent advertising campaigns involving children. One of the adverts, the designer’s gift-raising campaign, featured children posing with the brand’s plush handbags, which critics pointed out appear to be carrying bdsm and bondage-inspired accessories.
The second ad reviewed is Balenciaga’s Spring 2023 campaign, for its use of a printout of a Supreme Court ruling on child pornography.
In the post, the designer brand wrote, “We strongly condemn child abuse; we never intended to include it in our narrative.
“The two separate advertising campaigns in question reflect a series of serious errors for which Balenciaga takes responsibility.”
Stay tuned for the latest updates.
Author Ashley St Claire says people “don’t want an apology” from Balenciaga.
“We want to know everyone who produced, directed and approved the photos promoting child sexual abuse and exploitation,” she wrote on Twitter. “Who and how many people approved the creative pitch and final ads?”

Who else is dropping the brand?
Journalist and author Omid Scobie tweeted Sunday night that he had donated all the Balenciaga clothes he owned.
“I got rid of all my Balenciaga’s this weekend. I loved this brand, but no apologies will ever suffice for what they let happen. Canceled for good,” he tweeted.
The find freedom the author later clarified when asked how he got rid of the clothes: “Charity shop. It would be wasteful to throw away or destroy valuables that someone else might want (or want to buy and resell). Also, that’s what I’ve always done with unwanted clothes (unless it’s a major piece — then I’ll use Vestiaire).
