The week starts sunny before the next wave of wintry weather

Southerly winds and sunshine will bring highs of 50° and fairly pleasant weather for Monday afternoon. At the same time, our next winter system will take shape in eastern Colorado. A low pressure center will form there and move towards Iowa by Tuesday. Snow will begin to fall in the west and upstate Tuesday morning, while light rain will begin further south and east, including in the Des Moines metro. The rain will turn to snow from northwest to southeast through the afternoon/evening, then end early Tuesday evening as the system moves away into Illinois/Wisconsin. Measurable snow is most likely northwest of a line from Waterloo, through Ames, to Council Bluffs. The highest amounts appear to be accumulating north of Hwy 20. Once the moisture clears, northwest winds will bring wind chills in the 10s for Wednesday.
