2022 World Cup highlights: Costa Rica stun Japan late, 1-0

Sunday marks the start of the second week of the FIFA World Cup 2022and we’ve got you covered from start to finish with every must-see moment! Costa Rica started the day overwhelming Japanwinning 1-0 at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar to stay alive in Group E.

Keysher Fuller put Costa Rica on the board in the 81st minute after Japan dominated most of the game. Japan had multiple opportunities in the second half to get into the picture, but they failed to capitalize on them. Both teams now have three points going into the final game of the group.

Japan came into the game aiming for back-to-back World Cup wins for the first time since 2002 after dominating Germany, 2-1during his tournament opener on Wednesday.

On the other side, Costa Rica were looking to bounce back from a crushing 7-0 loss to Spain earlier this week.

48′: Japan wakes up

Wataru Endo tried everything and tried to score the first goal of the match, but Francois Calvo got his leg in front to help keep Japan off the board.

Takuma Asano attempted a header on the rebound, and was saved by Clelor Navas.

63 ‘ – Japan fails to seize its golden chance

Japan got a free kick from just outside the box which gave them a great chance to score the game’s first goal. However, At Yuki Soma’s the shot sailed over the net and the game went scoreless.

70′ – Japan misses a penalty

Calvo misfouled for Costa Rica on a potential scoring chance for Japan. He slipped tackled It’s Junya just a little behind the entry line of the box, giving Japan another free kick from that area.

72′ – Japan still can’t capitalize on free kicks

Following the yellow card, Daichi Kamada took the free kick just outside the box. Costa Rica’s wall was effective and blocked the shot. Soma got the rebound, but his shot was also blocked.

81′ – Costa Rica scores!

After being quiet for the entire second half and much of the match, Costa Rica might have kept their World Cup hopes alive when Keysher Fuller connected on a pass from Yeltsin Tejeda, scoring a goal from the top of the box. Fuller’s shot went past a tight Shuichi Gonda to make it 1-0 on Costa Rica’s first shot on goal of the game.

88′ – The chaos in front of the net almost allows Japan to tie it up

Now battling for a point, Japan were able to create traffic in front of the net. However, Kamada’s shot was saved by Navas and Costa Rica eventually regained possession after a few deflections in the box.
