Idaho police hold press conference 10 days after student murders

Officials in Moscow, Idahowill hold a press conference on Wednesday afternoon into the ongoing investigation into the gruesome murders of four local university students.

University of Idaho students Ethan Chapin, 20, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Madison Mogen, 21, were repeatedly stabbed and killed in the early morning hours of Nov. 13, officials said. Police have not identified any suspects.

Moscow police received a call shortly before noon on November 13 with a report of an “unconscious person” at the King Road home. Several other people had gathered at the crime scene by the time police arrived, officials said.

Police said the 911 call “came from inside the residence” and came from the cell phones of one of the surviving roommates. Police said several people spoke to the dispatcher before officers arrived.

Investigators determined that the four were probably stabbed in their sleep between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., after returning home from a night out. Some of the victims appear to have tried to defend themselves.

Two other housemates were inside the house, on the first floor, at the time of the murders but were not injured.

We think they all have was killed using a single “fixed blade knife”, which has not yet been recovered.

Police said the victims separated in pairs earlier in the night. Chapin and Kernodle, both 20, were spotted at the Sigma Chi house on the college campus and reportedly returned home around 1:45 a.m. Chapin was not living at the house, but was visiting, police said.

Goncalves and Mogen spent the night at a bar called The Corner Club, then drove to a local food truck, where they were seen around 1:40 a.m. They are believed to have been driven by a “private party” to his home. them at around 1:45 a.m., police said.

The surviving roommates had also been out that night, but returned home at 1 a.m., police said.

Police said they evacuated the two surviving roommates, the person who drove Goncalves and Mogen from the food truck and a person who was spotted on surveillance video standing behind the women from the food truck.

Officials said Thursday evening that investigators had received information that Goncalves may have had a stalker. Investigators “examined” these reports at length and “searched for hundreds of pieces of information” related to the stalker’s tip. On Tuesday, they had not been able to confirm the information or identify a stalker.

Moscow Police Department officials are asking the public to share “all outdoor surveillance video taken from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. on Sunday, November 13, 2022, of businesses and residences within” a specific area. A map of the area is below.

Moscow Police Captain Roger Lanier said on Sunday that investigators had received 646 tips since the attack and had since conducted more than 90 interviews.

MPD had assigned four detectives, 24 patrol officers and five support staff to the criminal investigation. The FBI has 22 investigators in Moscow, 20 agents in other parts of the United States, and two agents from the Behavioral Analysis Unit working on the case.

Idaho State Police deployed 20 investigators, 15 state troopers, a public information officer and a forensic services team to the scene, along with 15 uniformed troopers to assist in d other patrols.

A manhunt continues for the person or persons involved in the attack. In the meantime, the authorities have created a dedicated webpage related to the King Road attack.
