1,000 Stockton families given Thanksgiving groceries as inflation tightens during holiday season
‘Times are changing and it’s getting pretty difficult to make ends meet’
As Thanksgiving approaches, inflation is hiking food prices across the country – to help, a Northern California church gave away groceries for 1,000 local families.Hundreds of cars lined the Oasis Church parking lot Saturday morning, many of which arrived before sunrise. Each car represented at least one family, all in line to receive a car full of Thanksgiving groceries.“This isn’t a handout this is a hand up, we’re here to help them,” said Heather Green, with Oasis Church.Many families told KCRA 3 that recent price hikes at stores have been financially crushing.“Times are changing and it’s getting pretty difficult to make ends meet,” said Terry Johnson.Johnson, who just retired, was the first car in line; he arrived before 4 a.m.In the car next to Johnson, Bryan Rose sat awaiting groceries, his second year in a row.“With inflation rates and the economy going up and everything it just seems like everything, it’s harder and harder for people to get things,” Rose said.This year compared to last, Thanksgiving dinner for a family of 10 will be 20% more expensive for the same amount of food, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation.Items like diapers, which are the number one requested item besides food right now, are seeing a price hike of over 20% in the last five years.“We’re spending about $200 to $300 a week in groceries, for a family of three,” said Reaksmey Cheth as she picked up groceries for her family, a car seat sitting behind her.Oasis Church explained since the pandemic took hold, they have contributed 3 million pounds of food to the Stockton community.Video Below: Thanksgiving holiday travel to be one of the busiest in almost two decades, California Highway Patrol says leave early
