1 dead, 27 more injured in Brandeis University shuttle bus crash

At least one student was killed and another 26 were injured in a serious crash involving a shuttle bus contracted by Brandeis University late Saturday night. The crash occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m. on the 800 block of South Street, near the Brandeis campus.A statement from the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office said the bus was returning 27 Brandeis University students to campus from a hockey game at Northeastern University when the vehicle crashed into a tree.One neighbor said she heard the crash and heard screaming. Pictures and video from the scene showed a heavily damaged bus with a Joseph’s Transportation logo on it.Authorities said one student was pronounced dead at the scene and that the remaining 26 students, along with the bus driver, were transported to area hospitals with injuries of varying degrees. Authorities are not yet identifying any of the individuals involved. A Brandeis University spokesperson told NewsCenter 5 that 11 people involved in the crash remain hospitalized as of 9 a.m. Sunday.The heavily-damaged bus was towed away from the crash scene early Sunday morning.The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Waltham Police, the Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police Crash Reconstruction Section. No charges have been filed in connection with the crash at this time.Brandeis officials said the university will be providing counseling services to students and a student said the university sent an email inviting students to an 11 a.m. meeting at the campus center.
