Two police officers died and a third was seriously injured Wednesday night when responding to a domestic incident in Bristol, Connecticut, near ESPN. Bristol Police received a 911 call just before 10:30 p.m. from a Redstone Hill Road home for an incident between two siblings, officials said. “When officers arrived they immediately encountered the suspect outside 310 Redstone Hill Road. Shots were fired, fatally wounding an officer on the scene. Two other officers were transported to area hospitals. A second officer has been pronounced dead and a third has been seriously injured,” Connecticut State Police Sgt. says Christine Jeltema. Police say the suspect was shot and pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect’s brother was also shot dead and taken to hospital for treatment. Bristol Police Chief Brian Gould identified the fallen officers as Sgt. Dustin Demonte, 35, and Officer Alex Hamzy, 34. Officer Alec Iurato, 26, suffered a serious gunshot wound, underwent surgery and is recovering. “Words cannot express the sadness and grief that brings me before you this morning,” Gould said. “Sadly, we have lost two outstanding Bristol police officers, and a third has been seriously injured as a result of this senseless violence.” Demonte, who has worked at the department since 2011, is survived by his wife and two children “and one on the way,” Gould said. Hamzy, who was hired in 2014 and grew up in Bristol, is survived by his wife, parents and Iurato was hired in 2018 and is assigned to the department’s patrol division. “Our men and women of the Bristol Police Department are privileged and honored to serve on the front lines to protect and serve the community of Bristol, and that’s what these heroes did last night. They answered a call to the duty, and they responded without hesitation. That’s what they did every night before that, and that’s what all of our officers do and will continue to do day in and day out,” Gould said. Shortly after the shooting, a procession brought the two deceased officers from Bristol Hospital to the Chief Medical Examiner’s office in Farmington. “Bristol is our big little city. It is also known as All Hearts City. Today our hearts are broken. We are united in immeasurable grief for these hero officers, for their families and friends and for all of our law enforcement personnel,” Bristol Mayor Jeff Caggiano said. The city of Bristol is approximately 20 miles southwest of Hartford.
